The EMD SW1 is a 600-horsepower (450 kW)
diesel-electric switcher locomotive built by General Motors
Electro-Motive Division between December 1938 and November 1953. Final
assembly took place at EMD's plant in La Grange, Illinois. The SW1 used
an EMD 567, V6 engine, which generated 600 hp (450 kW). 661 locomotives
of this design were built, even though diesel switcher production was
suspended between 1942 and 1945 by the War Production Board. The
SW1 has a singular look with its sandbox in front of its radiator .
Incredible : this Amtrack loco was recently sold for 832 on ebay while its current price is still $ 500.
